Whether you’re new to the world of digital assets or an experienced crypto user, this guide is here to help you through the entire setup process.

What You'll Need

Before beginning the setup process, ensure you have the following items:

Note: The recovery seed is a crucial part of securing your wallet. Make sure to store it safely, away from digital or online sources, to protect your crypto assets.

Step 1: Visit the Ledger Setup Page

To begin the process, head to the official Ledger setup page: ledger.com/start. This page will guide you through downloading the necessary software and installing the required apps to use with your Ledger device.

On this page, you’ll be prompted to select your specific Ledger model (Ledger Nano S, Nano X, or Ledger Stax). Each device has slightly different setup instructions, so choose the appropriate option for your device.

Step 2: Download Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the software you’ll use to manage your Ledger wallet. It’s essential for interacting with your device, checking balances, sending and receiving cryptocurrencies, and installing apps for the various cryptocurrencies you’ll be using. To download Ledger Live:

  1. Click on the appropriate download link for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux) on the setup page.
  2. Once the file is downloaded, open it to begin installation.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.
  4. After installation, launch Ledger Live on your computer or mobile device.

Tip: Only download Ledger Live from the official website to ensure that you are installing the latest, secure version of the software.

Step 3: Connect Your Ledger Device

With Ledger Live installed, it’s time to connect your Ledger device:

  1. Take your Ledger device and connect it to your computer or mobile device using the provided USB cable (or Bluetooth for Ledger Nano X).
  2. Turn on your Ledger device. You should see the Ledger logo on the screen.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to select your language and begin the setup process on the device itself.

Note: Ledger Nano X users can connect via Bluetooth on mobile devices. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone for a seamless connection.

Step 4: Set Up Your PIN Code

For security purposes, you must create a PIN code. This PIN will be required to access your Ledger device each time you connect it to Ledger Live. Here’s how to set up your PIN:

  1. On the device screen, select the option to set up a PIN.
  2. Choose a 4-8 digit PIN. Make sure it is a number that is both secure and memorable.
  3. Confirm the PIN by entering it again.

Tip: Avoid using obvious PINs like "1234" or "0000" to keep your wallet secure from unauthorized access.

Step 5: Write Down Your Recovery Seed

When you set up your Ledger device, a 24-word recovery seed will be generated. This recovery seed is the only way to restore access to your wallet if your device is lost, stolen, or damaged. Here’s how to record your recovery seed securely:

  1. Write down the 24 words in the order they appear on the recovery sheet provided with your device.
  2. Keep your recovery sheet in a safe place, separate from your device, and never store it online or digitally.

Warning: If someone else gains access to your recovery seed, they can steal your funds. Always store it securely and privately.

Step 6: Verify Your Recovery Seed

Once you’ve written down your recovery seed, Ledger will ask you to verify it by entering the words in the correct order. This ensures you’ve written them down correctly:

  1. On the device, enter the recovery words in the exact order shown on the recovery sheet.
  2. Once all 24 words are verified, your device will confirm that your recovery seed is correctly recorded.

Tip: Double-check each word and its order to ensure there are no mistakes.

Step 7: Install Cryptocurrency Apps

Now that your Ledger device is set up and secured, you can install apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage. Ledger supports a wide variety of coins and tokens. Here’s how to install the apps:

  1. Open Ledger Live and go to the “Manager” tab.
  2. Select the cryptocurrencies you want to install apps for, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, or others.
  3. Click “Install” to install each app on your device. Repeat for any additional coins you want to manage.

Tip: Install only the apps for coins you actively use to keep your device organized and efficient.

Step 8: Start Using Your Ledger Wallet

Now that everything is set up, you can start using your Ledger wallet to send and receive cryptocurrencies securely. Here’s how:

Important: Always double-check the recipient’s address and transaction details before confirming any transfer.
